Recording of the Roman Theatre at Jebleh (Gabala), Syria

type: documentation, training
date: 2000-2002
for: University of Leuven and Syria–DGAM
(Syrian general department of antiquities and museums)

description:
In Roman times a theatre was built in the city of Gabala, probably under the reign of Septimus Severus, the first in a Syrian line of roman emperors. The conservation of this theatre makes part of a larger project by the Syrian authorities to revaluate today’s town of Jebleh, on the coast of the Mediterranean see.

A considerable part of the theatre is demolished, or the building might never been completed. The structure suffered severely from water infiltration, causing stone decay and settlings.

The present day access lies 3m above the original level, leaving a considerable part of the structure still unrevealed (but protected).
