type: documentation, restoration, training
date: 2001-2004
for: Rhein.-Westf. Technische Hochschule Aachen and UNESCO

description:
Otrar oasis is situated at the confluence of the Arys river and the Syr Daria, one of the main streams of central Asia.

Otrar was once the centre of a civilisation that lasted from 3rd AD till 17th AD and was based upon agriculture and trade, disposed along the northern Silk Road and irrigated by an elaborate network of canals.

Mounds or “tobe’s” are the remains of ancient cities, transformed into artificial hills after centuries of decay.

Archaeological activities in the recent past left the cultural layers unprotected. A first objective of this project is to preserve and restore these exposed structures. As field director, TS is in charge of the documentation, data-management and training of Kazakh experts.

A second objective is to support the Kazakh authorities in their preparations to nominate the site for the World Heritage List.
